It’s too bad that “wholesome,” in this case, means frolicking around Prague, Venice, and Berlin as the U.S. President’s daughter, eluding Secret Service agents, defying her second-term President father (Mark Harmon, totally miscast), and trusting complete strangers in a world where potential terrorism seems like nothing more than a pesky distraction. In other words, first daughter Anna Foster (Moore) is a complete idiot, oblivious to danger in a fluffy romantic fantasy that’s part Roman Holiday (the good part) and part bubble-gum star vehicle. Don’t blame Mandy for daring to shed her good-girl image; even her innocent skinnydipping scene was handled by a “butt double,” and she’s irresistible as she falls for the mutually smitten Secret Service agent (promising newcomer Matthew Goode) assigned to keep her out of harm’s way. Another budding romance involving two bickering agents (Annabella Sciorra, Jeremy Piven) is perfunctory at best, but if you’re looking for a picturesque, sweet-natured tour of Europe with a pair of likeable lovebirds, Chasing Liberty makes for a pleasantly brief vacation. –Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Am I Too Old?
I think this film was made for the teeny-bopper set and my own daughter (who was a teeny-bopper) dissed it because her set was very critical of Mandy Moore’s move from singing to acting. Still, this movie was for ME. A romantic comedy with a cute male lead!
Customer Review: A cute movie
While the story line is pretty predictable, I do enjoy the work of Mandy Moore, she is a talented actress that contributed to this movie.

Thompson’s psychotropic masterpiece of “gonzo” journalism. Unfortunately Cox departed due to the usual “creative differences,” and this ill-fated adaptation was thrust upon Terry Gilliam, whose formidable gifts as a visionary filmmaker were squandered on the seemingly unfilmable elements of Thompson’s ether-fogged narrative. The result is a one-joke movie without the joke–an endless series of repetitive scenes involving rampant substance abuse and the hallucinogenic fallout of a road trip that’s run crazily out of control. Johnny Depp plays Thompson’s alter ego, “gonzo” journalist Raoul Duke, and Benicio Del Toro is his sidekick and so-called lawyer Dr. Gonzo. During the course of a trip to Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, they ingest a veritable chemistry set of drugs, and Gilliam does his best to show us the hallucinatory state of their zonked-out minds. This allows for some dazzling imagery and the rampant humor of stumbling buffoons, and the mumbling performances of Depp and Del Toro wholeheartedly embrace the tripped-out, paranoid lunacy of Thompson’s celebrated book. But over two hours of this insanity tends to grate on the nerves–like being the only sober guest at a party full of drunken idiots. So while Gilliam’s film may achieve some modest cult status over the years, it’s only because Fear and Loathing is best enjoyed by those who are just as stoned as the characters in the movie. –Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Awesome movie!
If you haven’t seen this movie I don’t know where you’ve been. It’s based on the novel written by Hunter S. Thompson, who is one of the most fascinating people of this century. Buy this today.
Customer Review: Would be great IF IT WORKED!
Well I thought it was time to add this to my DVD collection and ordered it from Amazon. So I get it pop it in the ole DVD player and at 58 minutes in it freezes…and makes it impossible to see chapters 12-16. So I figure no big deal just have them send a replacement.

So the replacement comes. I pop it in start watching and guess what happens at 58 minutes in? Defective. The amazon rep says they have had this issue and it is widespread so why not pull them off your site? Why not have them manually inspected?

So now I am returning the 2nd one for a full refund. A refund BTW I have to wait 7-10 days for. I mean clearly I should be punished because of the lack of quality assurance at amazon.

So I bought the same title from a local video store today for a little more take it home and pop it in the ole DVD player and guess what happens? Works perfectly.

I give the movie 5 stars. I give the product itself and service associated with it 1 but would give less if possible.

By refusing to offer specifics, this chilling mood-piece rises above its familiar premise and achieves its desired effect of percolating dread. It’s a Wes Craven presentation, sponsored by the horror-meister but directed by Robert Harmon, whose 1986 thriller The Hitcher has a modest legion of fans. They deserves a similar following after its brief theatrical release; Harmon values suggestion over explicit frights (i.e., don’t expect a full-throttle shocker), and he effectively exploits our collective fear of things that go bump in the night. Petite newcomer Laura Regan is well-cast as Julia, a psychology grad student who, like a close friend who just committed suicide, has suffered “night terrors” since childhood… and her gravest fears have now returned. Is it all in her head, along with that mysterious implant in her skull? Do They really exist, in this movie’s gloomy nooks and crannies? If you prefer subtlety, They is creepily engrossing, and better than its box-office failure would suggest. –Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: One of the best horror films you might not have heard of
This film is well acted, has a decent story, good effects and an awesome ending. On top of that there is an alternate ending that just might be as good as the theatrical ending. This alone makes the movie worth at least a rent as alternate endings usually are synonomous with bad ideas that we swept off the cutting room floor and used as filler for the special features section of the dvd release. Maybe people are expecting nudity gratuitous violence and terribly bad language? Who knows, one thing I do know is that I adore horror films and this is one of the biggest surprises I have ever had while watching a rented movie. The impact is similar to Event Horizon, in that it is so not what you expect.
Customer Review: Is this them? Are these They?
You’ve got to love movies where Wes Craven’s name is listed along with the title, as if that somehow makes the film better. Wes Craven isn’t actually the director (that honor belonging to Robert Harmon and Rick Bota), so his connection to the film is tenuous at best. Besides, these days, Craven’s name on horror movies isn’t necessarily a plus.

They’s plot is simple: boogeymen are real (maybe) and they mark human children for kidnapping and eating later.

Or something like that. We follow the life of willowy Julia Lund (Laura Regan), a graduate student preparing to defend her thesis on psychology. With her long neck and bowl cut, Lund has a compelling screen presence; she’s especially good at welling up with tears at a whim.

Two men orbit our heroine, her EMT boyfriend Paul Loomis (Marc Blucas) and her childhood male friend Billy Parks (Jon Abrahams). The boyfriend is something of an anomaly; he’s a medical professional that lives with his two shlub roommates. Understandably, Julia doesn’t want to sleep over…although she does anyway, despite the fact one of the idiot roommates walks in on her naked. More on the sleeping arrangements later.

Billy is a wreck. He has a history of drug use and paranoia, and when rolling blackouts threaten to roll across the city (which I think is New York, but was never sure), he totally flips out. Billy is convinced that the things that go bump in the night are out to get him, and eventually, poor Julia. Why they’re out to get Billy NOW, as opposed to say, when they originally tagged him in the beginning of the movie as a child, we have no idea. Billy prattles on about how both he and Julie suffered from “night terrors” as children and that the things causing the night terrors have returned to collect them. Speaking of which, night terrors are integral to the plot but never adequately explained. The frantic conversation ends with Billy committing suicide in front of Julia by shooting himself in the head.

Understandably distraught, Julia visits Billy’s funeral, where she meets two other victims. One of them, Sam Burnside (Ethan Embry), is an artist who chain-smokes and paints really crappy pictures. The other roommate, Terry Alba (played by sultry Dagmara Dominczyk), doesn’t seem to do anything but speak with a strange accent and walk around in a swimsuit. It’s obvious from the start that both of these folks are doomed.

All of the characters seem to have difficulty finding someone to share their bed with, despite even Julia having a steady boyfriend. When her boyfriend does sleep over, he sleeps in a separate room for reasons that are never explained. And yet, Julia has no problem sleeping in her boyfriend’s bed (you know, the one with the two loud roommates who walk in on her naked). Sorry, if I was freaked that things might eat me at night, I’d find a bedmate, even if it was only a platonic bedmate. Sam and Terry seem like perfect candidates for just such an arrangement, but they of course split up…

They tries really hard to scare us without scaring us, relying on creatures half-seen. I couldn’t help but feel cheated; I really wanted to see some cool monster effects. We never get that much. Instead, we get a lot of information: THEY cannot abide the light, THEY can cause electrical devices to go out, and THEY tag humans as children with long slivers of bone. It’s almost like an alien abduction scenario, only THEY are interdimensional kidnappers.

They suffers from the same problem as Silent Hill; the heroine doesn’t really have a realistic chance of fighting back against the bad guys. Instead, she’s relegated to running, screaming, and then more running into really stupid places like subways. The rolling blackout threat never seems to come to pass; I had visions of the entire city being overrun as the lights went out. But no such luck, this is Julia’s story and hers alone.

The ending is grim and particularly unsatisfying. The alternate ending on the DVD was much bolder and certainly excused the flimsy plot. But unfortunately, the directors balked (or maybe it was good old Wes) and we end up with a standard plot with standard monsters and standard victims.

For all its flaws, They is still a pretty good creepfest. It’s just not a very satisfying movie, and after awhile the heroine’s histrionics become irritating enough that you start rooting for the monsters to eat her.

Richards is the author of a much-ignored advice column who’s trying to drag her hotshot stockbroker boyfriend (Sheen) to the altar. When a phony tip ruins Sheen’s career, Richards leaves for Brazil with the owner of a diamond mine. When the publisher of the newspaper that runs the advice column calls, Sheen grabs at the chance for a paycheck and writes for Richards. Unsurprisingly, masquerading as a woman saves his shallow male soul and his witty but insightful comments turn the column into a big hit. All seems to be going well until Richards suddenly returns and finds herself famous. Angie Harmon plays the publisher with whom–unsurprisingly–sparks fly. Jon Lovitz, Rosanna Arquette, and Estelle Harris provide helpful support. –Bret Fetzer
Customer Review: Light romantic comedy
In three words, this is a light romantic comedy.
But it is charming and funny!
Great job by Daniel Margosis and Robert Horn.
Customer Review: Worthy of 5 Stars, enjoyable as light fare
Saw this on TV last night for the 3rd time. Time to buy it for my library. Bright, lively, comedic, wrapped around a feel good love story. Angie Harmon and Charlie Sheen make a good couple. Support actors are good. I think I enjoy it most for its lightness, not a deep dark thread to follow. Kind of movie you can pop in the VCR every few months or so and still enjoy the light fare over again. My good advice is to enjoy “Good Advice”.

Stuff happens: a cop who likes her gets jealous and beats up the Muscles from Brussels (but only after handcuffing him), there’s a fire in the barn, bad guys are trying to drive her away, etc. The story was first developed by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct) and the late director Richard Marquand (Eye of the Needle). Eszterhas wrote the script, but who knows what direction this story was originally going? Van Damme’s best film is still Timecop, and this is a long way from the quality of that. –Tom Keogh
Customer Review: Best Van Damme Movie Ever!
Well first of all I never really liked Van Damme’s movies, well it’s not so much that I didn’t like them but it was pretty much the same thing over and over again…he would beat up people. However, this movie had a different story line. It wasn’t only an action movie, but a drama as well. I think that he did a great job potraying the character and he really took on the role of the “father” for the little boy. I think he did a great job with that, since when you looked at him, you could tell that he wanted to be part of that family. I think he should do more movies like this, and it is definetely worth seeing/buying…you’ll enjoy it :). So don’t wait any longer, BUY it. Oh and this one isn’t only for guys…my mom saw it with me and she enjoyed it as well. I believe females will enjoy this one as well.
Customer Review: BEST DAMME MOVIE EVER!!!!!!
This was such a well made movie and i don’t understand why JCVD doesn’t do more movies like this! They made JCVD more human than he was in films like Universal Soldier and Bloodsport because he was not the “i will kick your ass any day” guy. He was the “i will kick your ass to protect this family” guy. It also had an ending that the others didn’t, but i won’t spoil it for you. I love this movie, JCVD’s best work!
